5 perfect picnic spots in Vancouver

0
0

One of the best ways to celebrate the start of summer is to plan a picnic in the park with friends on a warm, sunny day. We put together a list of primo picnic spots in Vancouver so you can scope out your perfect spot and sample your delicious spread al fresco.

Five beaches right in Vancouver

Locarno Beach

Located right on the Seawall, this expansive and less crowded beach is perfect for a waterfront picnic with family and friends.  It’s a designated quiet beach, so no amplified sound is allowed. There are volleyball courts, picnic tables, a concession and a swimming raft.

Between Jericho and Spanish Banks

New Brighton Beach Park

Right by the Second Narrows Bridge and the PNE, this big, lesser-known park is kind of a hidden gem. There’s lots of grass, picnic tables, playground, outdoor pool, and a small strip of rocky beach.

3201 New Brighton Rd, Vancouver

picnic

Whytecliff Park

Just a short drive from downtown, this unique West Van park is one of the best spots for a picnic in a forested and oceanside picnic. Watch scuba divers suit up and dive in as you enjoy the rocky oceanfront beauty. There’s swimming, hiking, washrooms, and more.

7102 Marine Drive, West Vancouver

The 411 on picnics in the city

Panorama Park

Panorama Park overlooks Deep Cove and has a beach, sitting areas, a play area for kids and plenty of inviting grass to throw a blanket on. You can watch the kayakers while you munch on your meal. Oh, and make sure you pick up fresh donuts at Honey’s before setting up your picnic!

Panorama Drive, North Vancouver

Vancouver Art Gallery

Whether you prefer the steps by Robson Square or the fab new north plaza, an urban picnic may be just the ticket if you’re planning a downtown outing or a visit to the gallery. The central location offers great architectural views and well as first class people watching (think skateboarders, business people, tourists and protesters). Plus if you don’t feel like making lunch, there are always loads of food trucks at the ready.

Looking for a great summer day trip with the kids? Head to the Fort Langley National Historic Site for a day of history, exploration and play. Or take an overnight staycation in the oTENTiks and visit nearby trails, farms, wineries, berry farms and restaurants. We wanted to find out about  this historic site so we chatted with Nancy Hildebrand, Promotion Officer at the Fort.

A Q&A with Fort Langley National Historic Site

This was our first visit to Fort Langley and man was it cool. The staff are all dressed in period costumes, the buildings all show like they were still in the 1800’s this place is a definite step back in time. For a great family outing, I highly recommend Fort Langley National Historical Site

Give us a quick overview of Fort Langley Historic Site?

Rising from the mist of the Fraser River, the palisades of Fort Langley stand tall. Inside the walls, rough-hewn timber buildings recreate the rugged 1800s. See where Hudson’s Bay Company fur traders mingled with California gold prospectors and hear First Nations interpreters tell century-old tales. Feel the blast of the musket fire, pan for gold dust dreams and dress up to play a historic trading boss.

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

Brand new: Children’s Play Area
Step inside the new children’s play area, and let your imaginations run free. At the trade window, pretend to trade salmon, cranberries or furs in exchange for axe heads, blankets, rope and other props. Pack toy barrels with salmon fillets, roll them to model boats that you can pack and “paddle.” On the wall, a magnetic map of BC lets children discover the resources that drew the fur traders to the area, where Indigenous communities were already well established and trading along the network of rivers.

A dedicated toddler area with soft flooring provides a safe place for your youngest children to explore. Climb in a boat and catch fish with nets, load and roll toy barrels, collect magnetic cranberries in a basket, build a soft foam fort, and make a trade through the trade window.

2. Xplorers Program
Request your Xplorers booklet and follow the “X” signs to find fun activities throughout the site. Bring your sense of adventure and play the part of an 1800s Hudson’s Bay Company worker. Dress up and try out blacksmithing, barrel-making, trading and even being the boss. After completing a set number of these experiences, bring your booklet back to the Trade Shop Window to receive a certificate and souvenir.

3. Stay overnight in an oTENTik

“Booked two tents for a truly unique camping experience for my daughter’s 11th birthday. Six-man permanent tents with bunks, fridge, table, lighting and BBQ + fire pit use all appointed to each rental. Camp hosts were friendly and very helpful in getting us set up. Once site closes to public at 17:00h we had the run of the whole fort to ourselves and kids played for hours as we roasted marshmallows and chatted with other families staying in 3 other tents.”

oTENTik, exclusive to Parks Canada, is a cross between an A-frame cabin and a prospector tent mounted on a raised wooden floor. This water resistant accommodation is built to withstand diverse weather conditions and no set-up is required by campers. Each of the five units inside Fort Langley’s historic walls represents the heritage of Fort Langley’s diverse workers:

• oTENTik 1 – hǝn Ɂǝ́mǝt – First Nations
• oTENTik 2 – The Aloha – Hawaiian (ramp accessible)
• oTENTik 3 – Chez Louis – French-Canadian voyageurs
• oTENTik 4 – What Cheer House – North American gold prospectors
• oTENTik 5 – Stromness – Scottish boat builder’s tent
• To reserve, call 1-877-737-3783 or visit reservation.pc.gc.ca.
• There are five oTENTiks available; each can accommodate up to six people, with four single lower bunks, arranged in pairs, and one upper bunk (double size).
• Fees: $120/night, per oTENTik + admission fees. A non-refundable reservation fee also applies.

And more!
4. Pan for gold
5. Build the playhouse walls
6. Dress up in costume
7. Visit the farm animals

How should families prepare for their time there?

• Fort Langley National Historic Site is about 45 minutes from Vancouver, so it’s a great distance for travelling with a family. Bring water, snacks, comfortable shoes, dress for the weather, and of course, bring your camera.

• Within walking distance of the site, there are many restaurants and a biking/walking trail called the “Fort to Fort Trail,” and two museums across the street, so it’s easy to spend the whole day here. Langley also offers a Circle Farm tour with locally produced wine, cheese, and some great berry farms. Our site has a café, which is currently being renovated (should be open again sometime during the summer).

• For those renting an oTENTik, bring sleeping bags, food, clothing, insect repellent, and flashlights. The oTENTiks are furnished with beds for up to six people, mini fridges, dishes, and BBQs nearby.

What do people typically say after a visit?

It was great to know the birth of BC wherein the HBC Company established. It was an honour to become a BC citizen. Knowing how it was happened and begin. This is a great place to learn very educational especially to a migrant children and visitors. Being their part of a tour it was fun the staff are knowledgeable and very patient to share some stories about the Fort and pleasant to all the guests.

Looking for a great summer outing for a smokin’ hot day with high energy kids? Head to Cultus Lake Waterpark for a day of  watery fun! We wanted to find out about the famous water park so we chatted with James Kassier, Director of Marketing at the park.

>> Check out the full VM Picks 2018 Summer Bucket List!

Q&A with Cultus Lake Waterpark

Best waterpark by far, that I have ever been too” “Definitely going again this summer

Give us a quick overview of the waterpark.

Since opening in 1984 (that’s 34 years ago folks!), Cultus Lake Waterpark has continuously expanded and improved to become BC’s biggest and best waterpark. We are a safe and clean waterpark with slides and attractions for all ages, plus some of the most extreme waterslides you will ever ride!

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

  1. The Colossal Canyon is a must for the family. Takes up to 5 passengers down a whitewater rafting simulation. Most people never ride it just once – too much fun!
  2. Splash in our many interactive kid-friendly areas such as; the Pirates’ Cove, the Adventure River, the Turtle Slides and Pool, plus the all new Family Spray Park and Tot’s Castle!
  3. Bring your own picnic or rent a BBQ and enjoy our many complimentary shaded areas in the park or take a break from packing your own lunch and enjoy a wide variety of food and beverage from our 5 Food Service outlets.

How should families prepare for their time there?

Take a few minutes on the website to find out food and beverage restrictions (what is not allowed inside), and to look over which of the many rides and attractions (over 25!) that you will enjoy.

Arrive early to stake out your best place to setup in the park.

Ride the Boomerang first (it gets to be the longest, slowest moving line later on), then head off to other fan favorites like the Colossal Canyon and Radical Rapids.

Be sure to bring your sunscreen and plenty of water on sunny days.

Stay late to wait out the crowds and get a pile of sliding in before your day is done!

Why should everyone put you on their summer bucket list?

If you want a big North American Waterpark experience without the big travel and accommodation costs that normally go with it, you have to add Cultus Lake Waterpark to your bucket list. It will become the new “gold standard” by which you compare all other waterparks you will ever visit!

This post is sponsored by Cultus Lake Waterpark

The park has more than 16 rides and attractions for the whole family, including Adventure golf, and a number of family rides as well as exciting rides for thrill seekers. All guests to the park are welcomed to enter the park for free, stroll through and enjoy the many sights and sounds surrounding them.

Definitely a new family summer tradition!

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

  1. Bumper Boats and water blasters in our uniquely themed Bumper pool are a huge hit for families – especially on hot summer days.
  2. There is a wonderfully themed playground with rope bridges, a tree fort, and caves – plus pan for gems that you can take home with you.
  3. Options to enjoy our many family-oriented rides with Unlimited Ride Passes (General & Junior) or just do a ride or two with our collectible Ride Tokens.

How should families prepare for their time there?

Plan for a 3-4 hour visit if you want to experience everything. Bring your camera – there are amazing surroundings and theming at every turn. Enjoy the nearby lake and restaurants if you need an intermission entry and re-enter into the park as often as you like – gate admission is FREE.

Why should everyone put you on their summer bucket list?

You will have something truly unique and memorable that you will want to tell your friends and family about. You will attain a whole new hero status with your kids.

Cultus Lake Adventure Park was originally established as Giggle Ridge Adventure Golf in 2000, by award-winning theme-park specialists, the Imagination Corporation. Dreams to expand the facility finally came true when, in 2014, under new ownership, the spaces in and around the miniature golf course were transformed and turned into BC’s only fully themed Family Amusement Park.
