Summerland really does sound like the place to be in July or August! A visit to the stunning resort will leave everyone in the family satisfied, relaxed and happy. Think magnificent pool, nearby vineyards, a glittering lake and the comfiest beds this side of the Rockies. We chatted with the resort about its family friendly summer program.

Give us a brief description of what you are all about.

Amidst the beauty of vineyards and dramatic landscapes, the Summerland Waterfront Resort & Spa is set on a secluded stretch of Okanagan Lake shoreline, 15 minutes north of Penticton and 45 minutes south of Kelowna. The lakefront resort hotel features 115 condo-style suites, each well appointed with a full kitchen, dining and living areas, fireplace and most offer a balcony for stunning lakefront views. You are invited to live the Okanagan lifestyle and enjoy two outdoor hot tubs, a large outdoor pool with sundeck, barbecues, cozy beachfront, SWR boat rentals, fitness room, Okanagan events and meeting venues, as well as the Beyond Wrapture Day Spa.

Summerland Waterfront Resort is a favourite Okanagan hotel for its relaxed style paired with practical and convenient amenities. Each hotel suite features a full kitchen with all the cooking equipment and a dining area. The living room feels like home with a fireplace and flat screen TV equipped with cable and on-demand movies. Designed for rest and relaxation, the bedrooms each offer sumptuous memory-foam beds with pillow-top mattresses and premium duvet bedding. Spacious and modern, the bathrooms boast rain showers with deep soaker tubs, spa-inspired bath amenities and plush terry bathrobes.

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

  1. Summer Kids Club – Canada Day Celebration week
  2. Bring the kids bikes, Mom & Dad can rent cruiser bikes and helmets and explore lakeshore drive, Trout Creek trail, even pedal to nearby playground and splash park
  3. Pick fruit – cherries in July at the Dickinson Family Farm!

How should families prepare for their time there?

Pack light for hot summer weather, beach-days, fun in the pool and bonus – there are free laundry machines on site.

What do people typically say after a visit?

Very beautiful location. Love the town. Extremely helpful and friendly staff! We love coming every year and look forward to more fantastic quick getaways. Kids love the pool, beach, kids club and Kettle Valley biking trail!

Our new favourite destination! Front desk people were amazing and happy. They helped us plan our wine tour. The restaurant was so delicious and wonderful atmosphere. Room was incredible with an awesome view!

Why should everyone put you on their summer bucket list?

Canada 150! Top Ten Canada Day Events

Time to don your red and white gear and get patriotic! It’s not just Canada Day this year, it’s our 150th birthday, which means communities are pulling out all the stops. Here’s a sizeable list of festivities taking place around the city. Everything is happening on July 1st, unless otherwise noted.

Canada 150 celebration at Grouse Mountain

At this all-out Canadian extravaganza, you can try your hand at axe-throwing, show off your hockey skills at their puck shoot-out and capture a keepsake photo with Grouse Mountain mascot Grizwald the Bear. Take in Canadian movie classics in the Theatre in the Sky, hit up a ranger talk or listen to live music while sipping on a cold one in the beer and barbecue garden. Not to be missed are the special Canada 150 edition of the World Famous Lumberjack Show, and an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the “largest human maple leaf” in the world.

Canada 150 at Whistler Village

Summer in Whistler means a smorgasbord of all-ages activities and outdoor entertainment. Celebrate Canada’s 150th here and enjoy music in the mountains with free outdoor concerts from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Head out on a scavenger hunt, take photos and share on social media for prizes!

Canada Place and Fireworks

Looking for a big bang of a celebration? Canada Day at Canada Place is the largest Canada Day celebration outside of Ottawa, and they are celebrating for two days (July 1 & 2) this year to commemorate 150 years of confederation! The Parade will be on July 2nd this year, and the Kids Zone in Harbour Green Park takes place on July 1st. There are also free live performances, a citizenship swearing in ceremony and of course the fireworks!

Granville Island

If the downtown parade is too late for your little ones, there’s a glorious, upbeat carnivalesque parade with stilt walkers on Granville Island at 1:30 pm. As well, the Jazz Fest sets up all over the island with music for all ages. You can bring the kids down for some bicycle decorating from 10am – 2pm at Ocean Art Works. Swing by the False Creek Community Centre for more fun, a BBQ concession, and of course, the water park.

Fort Langley

Celebrate Canada’s 150th Birthday in the place where British Columbia was born. Fort Langley Village is hosting an arts, heritage and multicultural experience on King Street that will have everything from Shakespeare to hip hop as well as face painters, jugglers, balloon twisters, wheel barrow races, a First Nations art exhibit, historical re-enactments, birthday cake, a literary festival, cultural performers and more. And of course, free admission to Fort Langley National Historic Site, which has a special 150 celebration all day including a 9:30 outdoor movie screening.

Steveston Salmon Festival

long elegant dresses

Skip downtown entirely and hit the Steveston Canada Day and Salmon Festival – a very Vancouver way to celebrate. There’s a pancake breakfast starting at 6:30 am, a children’s bike parade at 9:30 am, and the main parade at 10 am. The children’s festival, craft fair, food fair, martial arts demos, and more run until 5 pm. Charlotte Diamond is performing on the Children’s Festival stage at 1 pm. The salmon BBQ starts from 11 am and goes until the fish runs out – cash only!

Canada Day at the Cannery

Visit the Cannery for free on Canada Day. Check out the new The Pull of the Net exhibit and visit the food vendors and artisans in front of the Cannery throughout the day. Stick around for performances at Fisherman’s Park. PS: If you have a free National Park pass, you can use it at the Georgia Cannery from Jan 1 – Dec 31, 2017 in celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017

Tsawwassen Mills

Celebrate Canada 150 at Tsawwassen Mills with a host of truly Canadian themed activities including face painting, tattoos, photo booth, arts and crafts, entertainment and more for everyone to enjoy for free. Their Long Weekend Savings Booklet will also be available offering a variety of discounts and gift with purchases for all shoppers – tourists and locals – during Canada 150 celebrations.

 Wesbrook Village Canada Day Run

Luxury Formal Dresses

Celebrate Canada Day by running through the woods in Pacific Spirit Park. There are a few runs to choose from, 10k, 5k, and a 1k kids walk/run too. There’s a giant cake from Save-on Foods, a bouncy castle, live music, and face painters. Don’t forget to wear red and white! Runs start at 10am, and it’s best to register in advance.

6 Pack Beach

Join them on July 1st for their annual 6 Pack Beach Bash from 10 am – 3 pm! It will run rain or shine so come dig, build and play! While the little ones dig in the sand, school aged kids can play volleyball, soccer or dodgeball. They’ll even have activities for adults to do. Free for all to come.

VM Picks: 2017 Summer Bucket List, a Q&A with Britannia Mine Museum

$

Next time you’re flying along the Sea to Sky on your way to Whistler, stop by the Britannia Mine Museum. You will not be disappointed! It is a kid-friendly, educational but exciting outing for kids and parents. We wanted to hear more about this National Historic Site so we chatted with Britannia Mine Museum.

Give us a brief description of what you are all about.

Across the globe, few, if any, mines are open for the general public to inspect. Britannia is different. Once the biggest copper mine in the British Empire, it’s been preserved as a National Historic site. Now, families climb aboard a rumbling mine train and chug into the dark. Inside and out of the tunnel, the mysteries of mining are explained, thanks to smiling, knowledgeable tour guides. Each one of them likes children, maybe because they never have to say “don’t touch.”

Britannia’s hands-on visit includes the fun of panning for gold (you find it, you keep it). A 14-million dollar transformation makes Britannia visitor-friendly. Because it is spread out over 10 acres, everyone can stretch their legs then re-charge in the cozy and comfortable coffee shop. Come with your family or book a guided group tour.  Trip Advisor gave it 4 and a half stars. Chances are, you’ll agree.

What are three cool things kids (or families) can do there?

1) Ride the underground train

2) Pan for gold

3) Explore 10 acres of historic buildings

How should families prepare for their time there?

Comfy shoes, your camera/phone and be ready for a day of fun! Special note: it is cooler underground. A sweater or jacket is recommended.

Are there any special Canada 150 tie-ins, events, activities, specials or displays?

Check out our “I Heart Carbon” exhibit, part of Innovation 150, celebrating Canadian scientific innovation in carbon.

What do people typically say after a visit?

“This is a great mine that is fun and super educational. You tour both the mine shaft on a train and the actual facility where the copper was processed. This is so much fun! All ages loved it!”

“Our guide was very good – giving us facts in a fun way and also going into the stories of people that lived and worked there. … Plenty of exhibits around to look at and investigate and you can even have a go at panning. Kids would love this place.”

Waterslides in Vancouver? We got ’em! Like a moth to a flame, waterslides are irresistible for kids, and a great way for adults to unleash their inner child. Grab the floaties and head to these swirling, twirling slides around the city.

Top Vancouver waterslides!

Slide the City

slide the cityMake a huge splash with the kids this summer by taking them on a 1,000-foot-long water slip-and-slide. Slide the City will be rolling down Lonsdale Avenue on August 12 and 13 This is a jam-packed party weekend filled with a ton of activities, so pack the sunscreen and head out early. Buy tickets online for ages five and up.

Granville Island Water Park

Nothing beats a free water park. This one has two giant slides and multiple tubes and fountains for hours of family entertainment. For your crawlers and wobblers, the park also offers a designated teeny-tot water section for splashing. Open seven days a week from July until Labour Day in September from 10 am to 6 pm.

Splashdown Park closed to many tears last year and reopened just a quickly under new management as Big Splash. Yes and the kids can still twist, splash, loop-de-loop and scream your head off at this revamped waterslide extravaganza, which sprawls across 7-acres and features renovated body slides, tube slides and kids friendly slides and splash pad.

English Bay Water Slide

This iconic slide has an almost 100 year history! If the kids are strong enough swimmers and brave enough for chilly ocean waters, this is a must. Go at sunset and high tide for an unforgettable experience.

Cultus Lake

A family outing to BC’s largest water park is well worth the trip. With rides for all sizes and temperaments, this 30-year-old park has something for everyone. The Bazooka Bowls, Rattler, Tubular Terror and Valley of Fear should satisfy the risk-takers! For the little ones, there are plenty of gentle slides from Pirate’s Cove and the Kiddie Castle to the Turtle Pool. And for grownups, there’s WIFI and five hot tubs.

Killarney Community Centre

Not your average community centre waterslide – this one’s enormous! A fun pool with a sloped, beach-style entry for babies to splash around. Perfect for a day of wadding around and taking in the beautiful mountain views.

If water slides are all a bit too intimidating, we’ve got plenty of options for watery fun!

5 sensory-friendly spots in Vancouver

$

0

Our son has sensory processing issues, most notably auditory. We’ve had many experiences of sitting at a restaurant when the environment suddenly becomes hectic with a crying baby and clattering plates, and our son immediately panics and erupts in tears. We do our best to anticipate and mediate the factors that are difficult for him and find that the best plan of attack is to know where and when we can go to create a stress-free experience for him.

Thankfully, there are some great places to go in Vancouver with children who have sensory and autism-spectrum challenges. The more you can find out about a destination beforehand, the more relaxed both you and your child will feel. The following places are worth checking out:

Cineplex sensory friendly screenings

Cineplex Entertainment offers Sensory Friendly Screenings in and around Vancouver. The movies are presented in a lights up, sound down environment and occur approximately every 4-6 weeks on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am. Take a look at the listings for Sensory Friendly Screenings coming up.

Grabbing a bite in peace

It’s essential to find not-too-busy, bright, noisy, or unpredictable dining environments for kids with sensory challenges. For our family, it’s been a process of trial and error to find the right spots that won’t overload our son. We’ve found a few tried-and-true spots that we can rely on to be calm and fairly quiet, including White Spot, ABC Country Restaurants, and even little cafes here and there in the city that are chill and quiet.

The key is to look for dim, quiet spaces with booths that help you feel enclosed from any hubbub. It’s a good idea to bring something to keep your child occupied whether it’s a favourite book, headphones, or just cuddling up for a chat in a comfy booth.

Serene swimming

KitsPool2

Check the hours of your local pool, or even call to find out when the quietest and least busy times are, so you can take your kiddo for a relaxing, rejuvenating splash that’s good for the body and mind.

Sensory evenings at Sky Zone

skyzone-sensory

Offered most Monday evenings from 6 pm-8 pm (double-check their events calendar before you go), Sensory Night offers a quieter way to experience this family fun spot, with the music turned down and staff that have been trained by the Canucks Autism Network! Plus…it’s only $8 for the child and tickets for care givers are FREE!

Nourishing nature

Nature is the greatest calming source around, and the best part is it’s free and plentiful in Vancouver. One of our favourite nearby spots is a quick hike around Rice Lake, a calm and quiet lake on the edge of in Lynn Headwaters Regional Park. it’s easy, low-key, and not physically demanding.

Have any ideas for other sensory- or autism-friendly planes in and around the city? Please let us know in the comments below!

Six tips for raising independent kids

$

0

Free range moms, latchkey kids, helicopter parents …  it’s hard to know where to strike the balance between freedom, independence and safety sometimes. While the government of BC hasn’t specified any minimum ages where children can be home alone or unsupervised, the Supreme Court ruled that children under 10 should not be left home unsupervised. In a recent case, where children were riding the bus to school without a parent, a letter from a social worker extended that guideline to being unsupervised at home, in the community and on transit as well.

Most of us want our children to become independent, confident adults who can navigate their world safely and competently, but with all this conflicting advice and all these differing philosophies, the question is HOW? Well we have a few ideas.

How to raise independent kids

As a parent, use your best judgement. Every child is different. Studies show that allowing your children to take some risks such as climbing trees, going to a nearby friend’s house, selling lemonade in front of the house, leads to healthier well-adjusted people.

Be neighbourly. Know your neighbours and the shops in your neighbourhood. Show your kids which houses are “safe” so they know where to go in times of need. (my biggest issue is someone getting hurt and they won’t know where to go or what to do. not abduction). Also, by being neighbourly, your friends will know your children and be able to keep a corner eye out on them.

Hot Topic: Father under scrutiny for allowing his kids to ride public transit alone

Start with groups. Whether it’s going to the corner store, riding bikes up and down the street, walking to school, playing at the local playground, everything is safer in a group.

Start small. If a friend lives next door or close by, have them go there themselves to ask to play. Head to the park across the street.

Observe and coach. Make sure your child knows the exact way to get to school school, how to cross streets unassisted and how to take the bus. Once you know they have it down pat, start breaking it down – only walk them part way to school (or follow a block behind them).

Encourage young kids with small acts of independence around the home. Start with small, monitored risks around the house. For example: using a small knife to trim the tops of strawberries, scooping out the pumpkins, stirring the spaghetti sauce, using the vacuum or clipping shrubs.

Where to get the best eyebrows in Vancouver

Science says eyebrows, not eyes, are your most important facial feature.  And who are we to argue with science? People recognize you because of your eyebrows; brows are the key identifiable feature that makes your face recognizable. Plus good brows can make you look rested, polished and even younger. Think of it like this: if your eyes are the windows to your soul, then your eyebrows are the curtains, and it doesn’t matter how beautiful the windows are if you have tattered window treatments.

Top Vancouver eyebrow gurus!

Sarah Killen

Sarah is a certified cosmetic tattoo artist who offers quality micro pigmentation procedures including, feather stroke and powder effect eyebrows. She uses three different kinds of machines, depending on what procedure she is doing (and what brow look you’re going for).

Have a waffle craving, or a kid who’s only eating waffles this week? (Other people’s kids get into that weird habit too, right?) Here are the best spots to get your waffle fix in town.

miura waffleMiura Waffle & Milk Bar

This kid-friendly Mount Pleasant spot offers Japanese-inspired waffles and waffle sandwiches in sweet and savoury flavours. Try the GFC (garlic fried chicken) sando or the Wanut, a doughnut-waffle hybrid that will blow your mind and change your life forever.

2521 Main Street, Vancouver

scandilicious 2

Dutch Wooden Shoe Café

This place is mostly about the pannekoek, but their waffles have an incredible taste and texture, almost like the inside of a fresh mini doughnut. Try the cherry compote, or go savoury with the Windmill Waffle: a waffle topped with smoked sausage, edam cheese, spinach, a fried egg and hollandaise sauce. Gluten-free pannekoek are available; there’s a kids menu and plenty of high chairs too.

Patisserie Lebeau

Less sit-down restaurant and more bustling café, this little spot is a great place to start a day in Kits or at Granville Island. Specializing in traditional Belgian waffles, Patisserie Lebeau offers a variety of waffle toppings and filled waffles; try the Brussels waffle topped with poached pear and caramel sauce. If you find you just can’t get enough, you can buy them frozen to have again at home. Not everyone in your party loves waffles? Their chicken salad on baguette is divine.

1728 W 2nd Ave, Vancouver

Scandilicious

It’s a little out of the way, but this Nordic-style waffle spot boasts both gluten-free and vegan options in addition to its ethically sourced ingredients, including organic Red Fife wheat. Kids will love the Vaffler, a Norwegian heart-shaped waffle topped with jam, fruit or cheese. You’ll love the price – nothing’s over $12. Pro-tip: their fresh-baked gluten-free brioche is outstanding; you just have to get there early, before they sell out.
